The Internet Explorer 6 was released in 2001 and nowadays it is still largely used (almost 25% market share). Despite any anti-microsoft fanatism IE6 is by far the most buggy, unsecure, off the standards, and not to mention obsolete (8 years people!) web browser ever made.
Because of this I have made this plugin. When activated in your WordPress blog it shows a warning message to every user using IE6 (or less) showing some links to alternate and much more up-to-date web browsers.
Features
- Two types of warnings: a small and discreete top bar or a huge-fullscreen-site-cover popup
- Option to crash IE6 browsers instead of giving any warning (oh! that’s a secure browser)
- Customizable message, be kind or be mean with your visitors
- Suggest up to six different browsers: Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer
- Test mode, preview the warning in any browser
Download
Instalattion
- Upload shockingly-big-ie6-warning.X.X.X.zip through WordPress interface or install it directly from the plugin area
- Activate it through the ‘Plugins’ menu
- Visit the settings page in the admin area at Settings > S. Big IE6 Warning and configure it

Hey,
Love this plugin, with that said, I have a few ideas and thoughts on it to make it really great. I am a php/html/css/javascript developer and would love to pitch in. If you are ever needing any help please let me know.
Alex
hey alex! thanks for the reply! im always open to new ideias/suggestions/contributions/etc! since im still a student is always nice have other people helping and teaching you new things. im about to release a new version of the plugin (its been dead for a while), so if you want to make any contributions will be very nice!
There could have the option for the site not to run with IE6. Just show the message
Hi matias!
This is a great plugin. Just wanted to know is it possible to make the plugin cover all the versions of IE (including 7 & 8) ? I want to tell my users to give up IE COMPLETELY not just till 6.6.
You can do it in such a way that there can be options to choose which versions to include and which to exclude. That would be a great help!
Thanx!
Hey, does this work with SuperCache?
hi! i guess so, some time after activating it you need to clear the cache.
@Serosis
hi serosis, im working on this, in the next version this will plobably be possible!
Is there any way to make this function outside of WordPress?
@Nietzman
Hi, i dont no much about theme development but i think you should have all the right hooks in your theme for plugins to work well, i will se if i can make a way for the plugin to work with custom themes and mail you as soon as i get an answer.
thanks for the reply!
Does this plugin require anything from the theme your using? In my case it only seems to work using the default theme, not my custom one.
grrrrrrrrreat job dude :)
…but maybe i should say “great intention dude” becauuuuse…
..am i the only one who get the error message on IE8 :(
Can you provide a version without the crash option code? My hosting provider’s malware detection refuses to let me upload the file via ftp to my site.
@Edde
there is none yet, but im planning to put one in the weekend.
And where is your “donate” button?
for the ones having some kind of problem, i have just release a test version:
http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/shockingly-big-ie6-warning.1.5.8.zip
with a ie6 php detection, that should solve any layout problem with layout errors (at least in non-ie6 browsers). i would appreciate any reply about this version here :D
thanks!
Just thought I would let you know that your IE plugin is messing up RSS feeds. At least for my site it is. Please help with this.
Thanks,
@matias s.
Yes, it only happens while using IE6.
@matias
It shoots out parts of my style of the normal IE7 when it’s activated! How can that be?
Anyone having trouble with version 1.5.6 with the options page appearing blank?
@Andi
hi! i have just test it on FF3.0.10 and IE8 (in test mode) and everything works fine, maybe its another IE6 incompatibility. this week and ill take a look to see if i can solve it.
Just saw you also have the problem on this page. When you try to open the screenshots, they appear on the very top of the page.
Hi,
seems like the plugin is causing complications when you use shadowbox.js. After the plugin throws its warning, Shadowbox pictures are not centered on the screen anymore.
Looks like it’s working now, thanks.
The new version (1.5.5) fixed the problem of the warning not showing on ie6
@matias s.
No problem, we definitely appreciate the effort.
@Catalin
i just test it here and you guys are right… something is wrong. But i tested the last version before rewriting (1.4.4) and its wordking, im rolling but to it till weekend when ill be able to fix this mess =/ sorry for this!
Same problem here…it doesn’t work under IE 6.0. First i suspected some conflict with another java script (featured content gallery), then i uploaded it in other WordPress based site with no java script and still doesn’t show under IE 6.0.
@Keonyn
Tomorrow i have test at the university, but after i will take a look if there is any problem… thanks for the reply :D
Not sure what the deal is, but it isn’t working for me. Whether I set it to top or center, it doesn’t come up in IE6. The funny thing is that if I set it to test mode I can get it to appear in every browser except IE6, but even in test mode it won’t show in IE6.
great plugin :)
Great plugin works great, but the test mode isn’t working for me in the new version though. Site is running 2.7.1.
Andy
Sorry but the new version in not working on my website, while the previous one was working perfectly… :-(
Another issue: if you try to deactivate and then activate again the plugin, it returns to default options, loosing messages and customized links…
Thank You a lot for Your job! I really appreciate it!
Works great, thank you
got some examples of each mode?
Thanks Dude! Great job, Great plugin
Like Obama said, You are the man! You did a great improvement on the plugin (even that stuff about chaging links)!
Thanks dude!
